Pakistan Monitor – Tracking the Anti-Islam Film Backlash

Violent clashes around the US embassy today:

Several people have died in protests in the past week against the film in the Middle East and North Africa.

The BBC’s Aleem Maqbool in Islamabad says some protesters have said they will not leave the diplomatic enclave until the US embassy is on fire.

However, he has not yet seen any evidence of the army’s arrival.

The Covert Contact Pakistan Monitor is picking up much of this activity (as are the dedicated embassy and consulate monitors). It is currently tracking discussions about the government, issues related to Afghanistan, and Islamists. As active as it is now it promises to be even more active during Friday’s scheduled protests.

France Fears Muslim Backlash with Cartoon Release – Live Streams Added

Embassies will be closed in 20 countries:

The French foreign ministry announced Wednesday that France will close 20 of its embassies in Muslim countries this Friday following the publication of controversial Prophet Mohammed cartoons by satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. Major protests in the Muslim world generally take place after Friday prayers.

The illustrations, which show the Prophet Mohammed naked and refer to the incendiary US-made film which has been fueling deadly unrest among Muslim communities for over a week, hit newsstands across France on Wednesday.

The magazine’s editor, Stephane Charbonnier, told reporters that the pictures, which are printed on the back page, will “shock those who will want to be shocked.”

Covert Contact is already monitoring embassies and consulates around the globe but a new France Monitor has been rolled out to give more focus to this event. This monitor tracks discussions about the French government, their embassies and consulates, and discussions about France and Islam/muslims.

Although the Covert Contact Terrorism Monitor did pick up chatter about the recent bomb threats directed at American universities it revealed the need for more direct monitoring of this subject. US Embassy Attacks Spread to Yemen – Covert Contact Monitoring

And now Yemen:

Turmoil in the Arab world linked to an American-made video denigrating the Prophet Muhammad spread on Thursday to Yemen, where hundreds of protesters attacked the American Embassy, two days after assailants killed four Americans in Libya, including the ambassador, and crowds tried to overrun the embassy compound in Cairo.

The Covert Contact Yemen monitor is picking up much of the chatter on this event. It currently monitors discussions about the the government of Yemen, military-intelligence-security issues related to the country, and mentions of conflict. Subscribers can find the monitor on under “Locations”.
