Monitoring the Black Bloc’s Role in Egypt’s Protests

Covert Contact - Social Media Situational Awareness - Black Bloc Monitor

The increasingly large (and violent) protests in Egypt are being tracked by several Covert Contact monitors – Egypt, Egypt Widescreen, Muslim Brotherhood, Riots, and the Mohammed Morsi monitor are all picking up on the activity. However, there’s a lot of unexpected action in the Black Bloc Monitor thanks to their growing presence in the protests:

An unpredictable new element has entered Egypt’s wave of political unrest: a mysterious group of masked young men called the Black Bloc who present themselves as the defenders of protesters opposed to the Islamist president’s rule.

They boast that they’re willing to use force to fight back against Islamists who have attacked protesters in the past — or against police who crack down on demonstrations. The youths with faces hidden under black masks have appeared among stone-throwing protesters in clashes with police around Egypt the past five days in the wave of political violence that has shaken the country.

During protests in Cairo on Monday, masked youths celebrated around a police armored vehicle in flames in the middle of Tahrir Square, waving their hands in V-for-victory signs.

The Black Bloc Monitor can be found in the “Movements” section of subscriber’s main menu.

Covert Contact - Live Streaming Social Media Intelligence - Jodan Widescreen Monitor

Jordan has some serious challenges ahead. It is struggling with growing internal unrest, dangerous radical elements, and conflict on its borders. All of this makes it worthy of a comprehensive widescreen monitor.

This monitor is tracking mentions of Jordan and Amman, discussions about the government and royal family, the Jordanian military and security forces, Jordanian intelligence, radical elements inside the country, issues related to Syria (both the government and rebels) and Iran, and incidents of violence and protest.

Egypt: Tracking the Reaction to Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi’s Power Grab

Covert Contact offers several ways to track the situation in Egypt. The Egypt Monitor has a dedicated stream for protests which is quite active. However, the streams that monitor the Egyptian government and Islamists are also tracking the unrest and political developments quite well. The Mohammed Morsi Monitor is tracking discussions about him, the Muslim Brotherhood, and any statements he issues. There is also a monitor dedicated to the Muslim Brotherhood that tracks any mentions of it and its activities in Egypt.

We’ll monitor the situation closely and add or update monitors as needed.

Bahrain Live Streams Updated

There’s no sign that the unrest in Bahrain is going away. If anything, the opposite is true. The Bahrain Monitor has been completely overhauled to make tracking of developments there a bit easier. The streams have been tightened up significantly and now pull more English language content that focuses on the conflict between the state and protesters. The Bahraini government, military, intelligence apparatus, and police are being monitored along with incidents of protest and violence.

Pakistan Monitor – Tracking the Anti-Islam Film Backlash

Violent clashes around the US embassy today:

Several people have died in protests in the past week against the film in the Middle East and North Africa.

The BBC’s Aleem Maqbool in Islamabad says some protesters have said they will not leave the diplomatic enclave until the US embassy is on fire.

However, he has not yet seen any evidence of the army’s arrival.

The Covert Contact Pakistan Monitor is picking up much of this activity (as are the dedicated embassy and consulate monitors). It is currently tracking discussions about the government, issues related to Afghanistan, and Islamists. As active as it is now it promises to be even more active during Friday’s scheduled protests.

France Fears Muslim Backlash with Cartoon Release – Live Streams Added

Covert Contact - Live Streaming Social Media Intelligence - France

Embassies will be closed in 20 countries:

The French foreign ministry announced Wednesday that France will close 20 of its embassies in Muslim countries this Friday following the publication of controversial Prophet Mohammed cartoons by satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. Major protests in the Muslim world generally take place after Friday prayers.

The illustrations, which show the Prophet Mohammed naked and refer to the incendiary US-made film which has been fueling deadly unrest among Muslim communities for over a week, hit newsstands across France on Wednesday.

The magazine’s editor, Stephane Charbonnier, told reporters that the pictures, which are printed on the back page, will “shock those who will want to be shocked.”

Covert Contact is already monitoring embassies and consulates around the globe but a new France Monitor has been rolled out to give more focus to this event. This monitor tracks discussions about the French government, their embassies and consulates, and discussions about France and Islam/muslims.
