Egypt: Tracking the Reaction to Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi’s Power Grab

Covert Contact offers several ways to track the situation in Egypt. The Egypt Monitor has a dedicated stream for protests which is quite active. However, the streams that monitor the Egyptian government and Islamists are also tracking the unrest and political developments quite well. The Mohammed Morsi Monitor is tracking discussions about him, the Muslim Brotherhood, and any statements he issues. There is also a monitor dedicated to the Muslim Brotherhood that tracks any mentions of it and its activities in Egypt.

We’ll monitor the situation closely and add or update monitors as needed.

Intervention is almost inevitable and the two Mali-focused monitors have been update to reflect this. The three column Mali Monitor is tracking the Malian government, Islamists, and discussions about foreign intervention.

The seven column widescreen monitor is tracking any mention of Mali, ECOWAS, AFRICOM, Islamists, the involvement of specific European countries, drone activity, and discussions about intervention. Of course, these could change over time but they’re tracking the story well right now.

Monitoring the Sinai from Three Perspectives

Covert Contact - Live Streaming Social Media Intelligence - Sinai

The Sinai continues to destabilize:

Egypt vowed Monday to take on Islamist militants who have turned the Sinai peninsula into a lawless haven and are suspected of killing 16 Egyptian troops as the fighters were en route to a failed assault on neighboring Israel.

But the goal of reining in jihadists in Sinai is complicated by limits on military activity in the area under the 1979 peace treaty with Israel and by tensions between Egypt’s Islamist President Mohammed Morsi and the country’s powerful military.

So with this (and other incidents) in mind we have rolled out the Covert Contact Sinai Monitor. This monitor looks at the area from the perspective of Egypt, Israel, and Gaza. While there is a fair amount of overlap in the live streams this format does highlight the issues in a pretty interesting way. Subscribers will find it in their “Locations” section.

Monitoring Cote d’Ivoire

Covert Contact - Live Streaming Social Media Intelligence - Ivory Coast

More violence in Cote d’Ivoire over the weekend:

At least five soldiers were killed in three separate attacks targeting Ivory Coast’s military early Sunday morning, two in the commercial capital of Abidjan and one in the east, military officials said.

Defense ministry spokesman Allah Kouakou Leon said a number of armed men wearing military uniforms stormed two police stations in Yopougon district in Abidjan on the country’s southeast coast. Three soldiers died in the first attack and two in the second.

A third attack on a military camp in the eastern part of the country injured “many” soldiers, said Kakao Kouassi, communications chief for the army’s chief of staff. The camp is located in the town of Abengourou, not far from the Ghana border.

Kouassi said that military officials believed the perpetrators of the last attack were loyalists supporting former President Laurent Gbagbo, and they had launched the attack from Ghana.

As a result we’ve rolled out a new Cote d’Ivoire Monitor for subscribers under the “Locations” menu. It currently looks for mentions of Cote d’Ivoire or Ivory Coast along with discussions about the country’s military, police, and intelligence forces. Incidents of violence are also monitored.

Monitoring the Ebola Outbreak in Uganda

Covert Contact - Live Streaming Social Media Intelligence - Epidemics

The mysterious virus causing deaths in Uganda has now been confirmed as Ebola:

The deadly Ebola virus has killed 14 people in western Uganda this month, Ugandan health officials said on Saturday, ending weeks of speculation about the cause of a strange disease that had many people fleeing their homes.

The officials and a World Health Organization representative told a news conference in Kampala Saturday that there is “an outbreak of Ebola” in Uganda.

This news was surfacing in the “Outbreak” live stream of the Covert Contact Epidemics Monitor. However, this is a significant event so the “Flu” live stream has temporarily been replace by one monitoring Ebola.

If the outbreak worsens a dedicated monitor will likely be added for all subscribers.
